Opening Weekend Of The 2013 Deer Valley Music Festival

By Nancy Barth
Jul 04, 2013

Deer Valley Snowpark AmphitheaterThis past weekend, our family had the pleasure of attending the Deer Valley Music Festival’s opening night at the beautiful Snow Park Amphitheater.  The Utah Symphony launched the festival’s 10th anniversary season with a patriotic celebration that included Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” As usual, the performance was excellent, and the concert was extremely well attended, despite the unusually warm weather (although, once the sun went down, the evening was quite pleasant).

The concert began with “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which is traditional for the patriotic concert, and was followed by the overture to Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story.”  The Utah Symphony then paid its respect to the Armed Forces by performing the themes for the Air Force, the Army, the Marines, the Navy and the Coast Guard.  During this segment, present and former members of the military were honored by being called to stand up.

The Utah Symphony also performed familiar selections by John Philip Sousa, George Cohan, and Leroy Anderson.  The ever-popular “1812 Overture” concluded the evening, and adhering to past traditions, the piece was highlighted by the thunder of cannons provided by the Cannoneers of the Wasatch.

The concert was originally supposed to be led by Utah Symphony Associate Conductor Vladimir Kulenovic.  However, while on vacation, Kulenovic was injured in an accident, and will not be able to conduct until later this month.  Fortunately, guest conductor Thomas Hong was able to fill in quite masterfully.  Hong, the newly appointed music director of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra in Ohio, is a full-time faculty member of Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston.

With such a fantastic beginning, we’re looking forward to a great summer music season at Deer Valley Resort.

On a side note, Deer Valley was listed among the country’s “Eight Amazing Outdoor Music Venues” by CNN Travel.  To read the article, please click here.

Last Weekend of the 2012 Deer Valley Music Festival

By Nancy Barth
Aug 13, 2012

Deer Valley Snowpark AmphitheaterThis past weekend, our family had the pleasure of attending the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony performance of “The American Songbook” at Deer Valley Resort.  The performance was outstanding, albeit a little wet, and the concert was extremely well attended despite the rain.  Mack Wilberg conducted the choir and the symphony, and the program explored the riches of the American songbook with music stretching across the spectrum of our country’s composers.  Selections included The Star Spangled Banner, Battle of Jericho, Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof and God Bless America among many other familiar songs.  The evening concluded with the choir’s beautiful and Grammy Award-winning rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic

Saturday’s performance by the Portland-based Pink Martini marked the end of the 2012 Deer Valley Music Festival.  According to Melia Tourangeau, President and CEO of the Utah Symphony, there was an overwhelming popular response to this year’s festival, resulting in record-breaking attendance.  We’re already looking forward to the 2013 Deer Valley Music Festival and will update you as soon as the schedule is announced.  In the meantime, we’re planning to attend the Utah Symphony’s Park City Winter Series at the Eccles Center in Park City, and will announce the schedule very soon.

Beethoven’s Fifth in Park City

By Jim Barth
Feb 16, 2012

Last week, Nancy and I had the opportunity to attend the Utah Symphony performance of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony at the George S. & Dolores Dore Eccles Center located in Park City.  Over the years, we have enjoyed attending the summer concert series held at Deer Valley® Resort, however this is the first year that the Symphony has held a winter series of two concerts, both of which I am happy to report were extremely well attended.  The performance was excellent, and the highlight of the evening was the solo performance by Dutch violinist Simone Lamsma, who Thierry Fisher, the Symphony’s new Music Director reportedly invited after hearing her play just once.  Ms. Lamsma has been described as one of the leading violinists in the world.  Prior to the performance, the President and CEO of the Utah Symphony, Melia Tourangeau, provided a sneak peak of the Symphony’s schedule for this summer’s Deer Valley Music Festival held at Deer Valley® Resort. Stay tuned for complete details and a link when the schedule is finalized.
